Endoscopic Sinusitis Surgery

Endoscopic Sinusitis Surgery

Sinus problems can develop in people for various reasons. Endoscopic sinusitis surgery is another method applied for relief after the diagnosis of these problems. With this surgery, while breathing becomes easier, infections caused by mucus can be removed.

Sinuses are air-filled spaces behind the eyes, connected to the inside of the nose. Infection of the sinuses is called sinusitis. Due to sinusitis, the opening between the sinus and the nose is clogged with mucus. Endoscopic sinusitis surgery is a surgical procedure applied to solve serious sinus problems. Thanks to this surgery, the passage between the sinus and the nose is widened and the mucus is prevented from being compressed.

How is Endoscopic Sinusitis Surgery Performed?

Before the operation, the person is given local or general anesthesia. It is an operation that usually takes 1-2 hours and does not involve any incisions. The procedure is carried out entirely through the nostrils.

With the endoscope with a light on its tip, the factors causing sinus congestion are eliminated. When necessary, the bony structures in the sinus are reduced with special devices. It is usually inflated by placing a balloon that provides width to the space between the sinus and nose with the endoscope. When sufficient width is achieved, the balloon is removed.

Who Can Have Endoscopic Sinusitis Surgery?

Before endoscopic sinusitis surgery, the medical history is examined by the doctor. At the same time, it is controlled which parts of the sinuses are affected by nasal endoscopy or computed tomography. Surgery may be recommended if the person has the following conditions:

  • History of frequent sinus infections
  • Presence of nasal polyps
  • Congestion in the nose
  • Nasal tumors
